Phospholipid Dispersion

Phospholipid dispersion is the distribution of amphiphilic phospholipid molecules throughout an aqueous medium, where their self-assembly creates organized structures important in biochemistry. When hydrated, polar headgroups interact with water while hydrophobic fatty-acid tails avoid it, driving formation of bilayers, vesicles, or other lipid aggregates; mixing energy and composition influence particle size and stability. These dispersions provide simplified models of biological membranes and support studies of membrane structure, lipid–protein interactions, transport, and signaling. They are also used to prepare liposomes and related delivery systems, linking fundamental membrane chemistry with applications in biotechnology and pharmaceutical research.

In this video, we demonstrate the interaction between proteins and artificial phospholipid vesicles using quantitative flow cytometry. The binding of fluorescently-labeled proteins to fluorescently-labeled phospholipid vesicles increases the mean fluorescence intensity, and this increase is detected by a flow cytometer.

Phospholipid fatty acids provide information about the structure of soil microbial communities. We present methods for extraction from soil samples with a single-phase chloroform mixture, fractionation of extracted lipids using solid phase extraction columns, and methanolysis to produce fatty acid methyl esters, which are analyzed by capillary gas chromatography.

Ecology is the study of how organisms interact with their environment and with one another. An important aspect of ecology is understanding where species are found and how individuals are distributed within those areas. The geographic range of a species refers to the total area where its members are located, while dispersion describes the pattern of spacing of individuals within that range.Geographic Range and Dispersion PatternsWithin a species’ geographic range, individuals may be distributed...
