Chitosan Film Preparation

Chitosan film preparation is a bioengineering method for converting chitosan, a biodegradable polysaccharide derived from chitin, into thin, functional films for controlled material design. In a typical process, chitosan dissolves in a dilute acidic solution because protonation of its amino groups increases solubility; the solution is then cast onto a surface and dried, with formulation conditions influencing film thickness, strength, flexibility, and permeability. These films can serve as biocompatible matrices for wound dressings, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and biosensor interfaces. Understanding preparation-structure relationships helps researchers tailor chitosan films for biomedical devices and other sustainable material applications.

Sutures are usually needed to repair tissue during surgical procedures. However, their application can be problematic as they are invasive and may damage tissue. The fabrication and application methods of a novel tissue adhesive are here reported. This adhesive film is laser-activated and does not require the use of sutures.

Source: Logan G. Kiefer, Andrew R. Falkowski, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electroplating is a process that uses electric current to reduce dissolved metal cations so that they form a thin coating on an electrode. Other thin film deposition techniques include chemical vapor deposition (CVD), spin coating, dip coating, and sputter deposition among others. CVD uses a gas-phase precursor of the element to be...
