Internal State Variable

An internal state variable is a model quantity that represents a system’s hidden condition and records information about its history, enabling prediction of future behavior from the current state. In bioengineering, it may describe evolving features such as damage, adaptation, chemical composition, or cellular activation that cannot be captured by external inputs alone. The variable changes according to governing evolution laws, often driven by mechanical loading, transport, reaction, or biological regulation, and influences the system’s subsequent response. Internal state variables therefore support constitutive models of biomaterials, tissues, and bioprocesses, improving analysis of time-dependent behavior, remodeling, degradation, and treatment or device performance.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia The goal of many chemical analyses is a quantitative analysis, where the amount of a substance in a sample is determined. In order to accurately calculate the concentration of an unknown from a sample, careful sample preparation is key. Every time a sample is handled or transferred, some of the sample can be lost. There are strategies however, for minimizing sample loss. There are also strategies for coping with sample loss and...

Internal Energy

2020

The total of all possible kinds of energy present in a substance is called the internal energy (U), sometimes symbolized as E. Suppose a system with initial internal energy, Uinitial, undergoes a change in energy (transfer of work or heat), and the final internal energy of the system is Ufinal. Change in internal energy equals the difference between Ufinal and Uinitial. Although the values for Ufinal and Uinitial cannot be determined for a system, the first law of thermodynamics only...

A random variable is a single numerical value that indicates the outcome of a procedure. The concept of random variables is fundamental to the probability theory and was introduced by a Russian mathematician, Pafnuty Chebyshev, in the mid-nineteenth century. Uppercase letters such as X or Y denote a random variable. Lowercase letters like x or y denote the value of a random variable. If X is a random variable, then X is written in words, and x is given as a number. For example, let X = the...

Variability: Analysis

Measures of variability are statistical metrics that reveal the dispersion pattern within a dataset. They are pivotal in biostatistics, providing insights into the heterogeneity within health and biological data. Variability signifies the degree to which data points diverge from one another, helping researchers understand the potential range of values and associated uncertainty within the data. The range is a simple measure of variability, indicating the difference between the highest and...
