Ischemia Mitigation Strategy

An ischemia mitigation strategy is an intervention designed to limit tissue injury when blood flow and oxygen delivery are reduced or interrupted. In bioengineering, these strategies preserve cell viability by improving oxygen and nutrient transport, lowering metabolic demand, or controlling the return of circulation to reduce reperfusion injury. Approaches may include engineered biomaterials, vascularization methods, oxygen-releasing systems, and perfusion technologies for living tissues. They support tissue engineering, organ preservation, transplantation, and the development of implantable devices by improving survival and function during periods of limited perfusion. Effective mitigation can also guide the design of more resilient tissues and clinically relevant models of ischemic injury.

Mitigating Moral Hazard

2025

Moral hazard refers to the situation where individuals or entities take greater risks because they do not bear the full consequences of their actions. Reducing moral hazard requires strategies that limit risk exposure and promote responsible behavior. For example, a common way to reduce moral hazard in commercial property insurance is by requiring safety measures. This includes fire alarms, sprinkler systems, and working smoke detectors. These devices help to prevent fires or reduce their...

Source: Zheng, Y., et al. Experimental Models to Study the Neuroprotection of Acidic Postconditioning Against Cerebral Ischemia. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the application of acidic postconditioning (APC) to evaluate its neuroprotective effects against ischemic injury in a mouse model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). It outlines the steps involved in reperfusion in the MCAO model and the application of APC during reperfusion to mitigate excitotoxicity, oxidative...

Mitigating Lemons Problem I: Reducing Asymmetric Information

2025

Asymmetric information is a situation where one party in a transaction possesses more information than the other. However, several strategies can help mitigate this issue by enhancing transparency and reducing information gaps.Sometimes, buyers have less information than the sellers. In markets where product quality is not immediately apparent to the buyers, buyers can use the service provided by third-party experts to assess the condition of the used products before completing a transaction.
