Motor Skills Rehabilitation

Motor skills rehabilitation is the systematic restoration or improvement of movement, coordination, and functional independence after injury, disease, or developmental impairment. It combines repeated, goal-directed practice with sensory feedback and graded challenges to strengthen motor learning and promote adaptive changes in the nervous system. In bioengineering, rehabilitation programs may incorporate robotic exoskeletons, wearable sensors, virtual environments, and electrical stimulation to measure performance, assist movement, and personalize training. These technologies can provide objective data on strength, range of motion, and coordination while supporting intensive therapy. Motor skills rehabilitation therefore links clinical care with engineering to improve recovery and guide the development of more effective assistive systems.

We describe a novel virtual-reality based setup which exploits voluntary control of one hand to improve motor-skill performance in the other (non-trained) hand. This is achieved by providing real-time movement-based sensory feedback as if the non-trained hand is moving. This new approach may be used to enhance rehabilitation of patients with unilateral hemiparesis.

Motor Skills Development During Early Childhood

2026

Early childhood is a period of rapid motor development in which children refine gross and fine motor skills. These abilities increase independence and support social interaction, play, and learning.Gross Motor SkillsGross motor skills involve coordinated movements of large muscle groups, including running, jumping, and climbing. By about 2.5 years, most children can jump with both feet. Hopping, which requires greater balance and strength, usually emerges around age 4.Stair climbing also...
