Soft Robotic Fins

Soft robotic fins are flexible, biomimetic actuators that generate movement or propulsion through controlled deformation, offering a compliant alternative to rigid mechanical systems. Typically fabricated from elastomers and driven by pneumatic chambers, tendons, shape-memory materials, or embedded fluidic networks, these fins bend, oscillate, or undulate when forces are applied, reproducing aspects of aquatic and animal locomotion. In bioengineering, they support the development of underwater robots, prosthetic and assistive devices, and experimental platforms for studying locomotion and fluid-structure interactions. Their softness improves adaptability and safety in contact with delicate environments, while tunable motion enables efficient, biologically inspired movement.
