Particle Tracker

A particle tracker is a computational tool that detects and follows individual particles across sequential microscopy images, converting their movement into quantitative trajectories. It matters because these trajectories reveal how molecules, vesicles, organelles, or other labeled structures move within biological systems. The method typically identifies particle positions in each frame, links corresponding positions over time, and calculates features such as displacement, velocity, and diffusion behavior. In biological research, particle tracking supports studies of intracellular transport, membrane dynamics, cytoskeletal motion, and responses to experimental conditions, helping researchers compare mechanisms and quantify dynamic cellular processes.

We recently proposed a method that allows dichoptic visual stimulus presentation and binocular eye tracking simultaneously1. The key is the combination of an infrared eye tracker and the corresponding infrared-transparent mirrors. This manuscript provides an in depth protocol for initial setup and everyday operation.

Particle-tracking microrheology investigates the viscoelasticity of materials. Here, the technique is used to determine the viscoelasticity, creep compliance and effective crosslinking roles of different matrix components of a bacterial biofilm. The matrix consists of polymeric substances secreted by the bacteria and its components determine biofilm structure and mechanical properties.

Subatomic Particles

Dalton was only partially correct about the particles that make up matter. All matter is composed of atoms, and atoms are composed of three smaller subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. These three particles account for the mass and the charge of an atom. The Discovery of the Electron The first clue about the subatomic structure came at the end of the 19th century when J.J. Thomson discovered the electron using a cathode ray tube. This apparatus consisted of a sealed glass...
