Mated Female Exposure

Mated female exposure is an experimental approach in which females are exposed to a chemical, biological agent, environmental condition, or other stimulus after mating to assess effects on reproduction and offspring development. The exposure is timed to the reproductive cycle, allowing researchers to examine how maternal uptake, metabolism, and physiological changes influence embryos or fetuses through gestation and, when exposure continues, newborns through lactation. In biology, this design helps identify developmental, behavioral, reproductive, or transgenerational outcomes and supports investigations of maternal influences on disease risk, toxicology, and environmental health.

Fishery-induced changes to exploited crustacean fisheries, such as the American lobster fishery, could potentially influence their reproductive dynamics, leading to a reduction in mating success. This study's goal was to develop a noninvasive method for ascertaining the mating success of female lobsters that may be physiologically or functionally mature.

Sexual Selection Class Simulation ExpandNote: In this activity, you and your classmates will portray a sexually reproducing population consisting of an equal number of male and female animals. You will simulate several different mating scenarios to determine how relative quality, attractiveness, sex, and parental commitment affect mate choice and reproductive success. The goal of this activity is to maximize your progeny. Hypotheses: There are several overall hypotheses for female and male...

Choosing Mates Evolutionary fitness is largely determined by the ability of an organism to survive and successfully produce offspring. Critical to this process is sexual selection, which plays a large role in the determination of mating pairs, and thus which genes are passed on to the next generation. Often, intense competition for mates within a population places selective pressure on traits related to courtship and copulation. Natural selection that results from these pressures is called...

The Trypanosoma cruzi agent of Chagas disease produces long-lasting asymptomatic infections that abruptly develop into clinically recognized pathology. The following research protocol describes a short-run family-based epidemiological study to unravel the T. cruzi infection transmitted sexually from parent to progeny.
