Meniscus Measurement

Meniscus measurement is a laboratory technique for determining liquid volume by reading the curved surface of a liquid in a calibrated vessel, such as a graduated cylinder, pipette, or burette. Surface tension causes most aqueous liquids to form a concave meniscus, so the observer aligns their eyes with the liquid surface and reads the lowest point at the calibration mark; correct positioning minimizes parallax error. In biology, accurate meniscus measurement supports the preparation of solutions, dilution series, culture media, and assay reagents. Consistent readings improve experimental reproducibility and help ensure that calculated concentrations and biological results are reliable.

Uncertainty in Measurement: Reading Instruments

Counting is the type of measurement that is free from uncertainty, provided the number of objects being counted does not change during the process. Such measurements result in exact numbers. By counting the eggs in a carton, for instance, one can determine exactly how many eggs are there in the carton. Similarly, the numbers of defined quantities are also exact. For example, 1 foot is exactly 12 inches, 1 inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters, and 1 gram is exactly 0.001 kilograms. Quantities...

Source: Smaa Koraym at Johns Hopkins University, MD, USA Measuring Diameter and CircumferenceExpand Error can be introduced in any experiment, even when the technique is performed carefully and correctly. It is essential to critically examine your experimental methods when performing any lab exercise in order to understand and evaluate uncertainty. In this part of the lab, you'll determine a procedure for measuring the circumference of different glassware and then assess sources of error in...
