Surgical Dissection

Surgical dissection is the controlled separation and removal of tissues using precise surgical techniques, enabling researchers to examine anatomy, pathology, and disease-associated changes. In cancer research, investigators expose and excise tumors, adjacent normal tissue, or lymph nodes while preserving tissue architecture and clinically relevant margins; specimens can then undergo histopathological, molecular, or cellular analysis. This approach supports tumor classification, assessment of local invasion and metastasis, and comparison of treatment responses. Careful dissection also improves the quality of tissue samples used to develop cancer models, identify biomarkers, and clarify how tumors interact with their surrounding microenvironment.

The zebrafish kidney is home to both renal and hematopoietic adult stem/progenitor cells, and represents an outstanding opportunity to study these cell types and their progeny in a vertebrate model organism. Here, we demonstrate a detailed dissection procedure that enables the researcher to identify and surgically remove the adult zebrafish kidney, which can be used for applications such as cell isolation, transplantation, and expression studies of kidney and/or blood cell populations.

Open Surgical Resection of Cerebral Arteriovenous Malformations

Source: Rennert, R. C., et al. Comprehensive Endovascular and Open Surgical Management of Cerebral Arteriovenous Malformations. J. Vis. Exp. (2017).This video demonstrates the open surgical resection of a cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in a human brain. The procedure involves creating a bone flap, accessing the subarachnoid space, identifying and occluding feeding arteries and draining veins, and carefully removing the AVM. Intraoperative angiography confirms complete resection,...
