3d Culture

3D culture is a laboratory method that grows cells within or on three-dimensional environments, better reproducing the spatial organization and cell interactions found in living tissues than conventional two-dimensional culture. In cancer research, tumor cells form spheroids, organoids, or other multicellular structures as cells adhere to one another and respond to gradients of nutrients, oxygen, and signaling molecules throughout the model. These cultures can reveal how tumors grow, invade surrounding tissue, develop treatment resistance, and interact with their microenvironment. By providing more physiologically relevant models for drug testing and disease studies, 3D culture supports more informative cancer research and advances toward personalized therapeutic strategies.

A 3D system of culturing human articular chondrocytes in high levels of synovial fluid is described. Synovial fluid reflects the most natural microenvironment for articular cartilage, and can be easily obtained and stored. This system thus can be used for studying cartilage regeneration and for screening therapeutics for treating arthritis.
