Tissue Marking Inks

Tissue marking inks are colored formulations applied to surgical or biopsy specimens to identify tissue surfaces, margins, and orientation during pathological examination. They adhere to the specimen, remain visible through fixation and tissue processing, and create a durable visual map that links microscopic sections to the original anatomy. In cancer research, this marking supports accurate evaluation of tumor margins, invasion patterns, and relationships between malignant and surrounding tissue, helping researchers correlate histological findings with specimen location. Consistent use of distinct colors can improve specimen handling, documentation, and comparison across studies, strengthening analyses of resection quality, tumor spread, and surgical outcomes.

Analysis of rodent cerebrovascular anatomy plays an important role in experimental stroke research. In this context, intravascular perfusion with colored latex has been considered as a standard tool for several years. However, this technique implies distinct technical limitations, which undermine its reproducibility. Here, we describe a simple method to visualize cerebral vessels in a reproducible manner. Injection of a mixture of two commercially available carbon black inks through the left...

Bone Markings

2025

Bones have various surface features that help form joints and attach to other soft tissues. Depending on the function, bone markings are categorized into articulating projections, processes for attachment, depressions, and openings. Articulating Projections Articulating projections are found where two bones meet to form a joint. These structures are usually found at the ends of bones. The largest articulation is a rounded projection called the head, supported by a narrow neck at the ends of...
