Alpha Beta Anomers

Alpha and beta anomers are stereoisomeric forms of cyclic sugars that differ in configuration at the anomeric carbon, the carbon derived from the original carbonyl group. When a monosaccharide cyclizes, an intramolecular reaction forms a hemiacetal or hemiketal, creating a new stereocenter; the anomeric hydroxyl group adopts either the alpha or beta orientation relative to the reference substituent, and the forms can interconvert through the open-chain structure in a process called mutarotation. Understanding these anomers helps explain carbohydrate structure, reactivity, glycosidic bond formation, and the behavior of sugars in biochemical pathways and analytical chemistry.

Beta is a crucial metric in finance used to assess an investment's risk and expected return relative to the overall market. It is calculated as the slope of the line in a scatterplot that compares the returns of an individual stock to the returns of the market benchmark, typically represented by a broad market index. Beta quantifies how much a stock's price moves in response to market movements, providing insight into its volatility and systematic risk. A beta of one indicates that the stock's...

Here, we present a protocol for the isolation of increasingly insoluble/aggregated alpha-synuclein (α-syn) from post-mortem human brain tissue. Through the utilization of buffers with increasing detergent strength and high-speed ultracentrifugation techniques, the variable properties of α-syn aggregation in diseased and non-diseased tissue can be examined.

Cell-mediated lymphocytotoxicity (CML) assays can be used to test autoreactive responses and study mechanisms of cell death in vitro. However, using live-cell confocal microscopic imaging techniques with fluorescent dyes, the type and kinetics of cell death as well as the pathways utilized can be studied in greater detail.
