Born Constant

The Born constant is a physical constant used in the Born model to relate an ion’s electrostatic solvation free energy to its charge, size, and surrounding dielectric medium. It combines fundamental quantities, including the Avogadro constant, elementary charge, and vacuum permittivity, so the model can express the energetic cost or benefit of transferring an ion from vacuum into a solvent with dielectric constant ε. In chemistry, this relationship helps estimate hydration and solvation energies, compare ionic environments, and interpret trends in ion stability, partitioning, and electrolyte behavior. Its predictions depend on treating the ion as a charged sphere and therefore provide an idealized baseline for more detailed models.

The Born-Haber Cycle

Lattice Energy An ionic compound is stable because of the electrostatic attraction between its positive and negative ions. The lattice energy of a compound is a measure of the strength of this attraction. The lattice energy (ΔHlattice) of an ionic compound is defined as the energy required to separate one mole of the solid into its component gaseous ions. Here, the convention is used where the ionic solid is separated into ions, meaning the lattice energies will be endothermic (positive...

We suggest a Born normalized approach for Optical Projection Tomography (BnOPT) that accounts for the absorption properties of imaged samples to obtain accurate and quantitative fluorescence tomographic reconstructions. We use the proposed algorithm to reconstruct the fluorescence molecular probe distribution within small animal organs.

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA In contrast to the production of cars or toasters, where millions of identical copies are made and extensive prototype testing is possible, each civil engineering structure is unique and very expensive to reproduce (Fig.1). Therefore, civil engineers must extensively rely on analytical modeling to design their structures. These models are simplified abstractions of reality and are used to...

Constant Pressure Calorimetry

2020

Calorimetry is a technique used to measure the amount of heat involved in a chemical or physical process or to measure the heat transferred to or from a substance. The heat is exchanged with a calibrated and insulated device called the calorimeter. Calorimetry experiments are based on the assumption that there is no heat exchange between the insulated calorimeter and the external environment. The well-insulated calorimeters prevent the transfer of heat between the calorimeter and its external...
