Cahn Ingold Prelog

The Cahn-Ingold-Prelog system is a set of internationally used rules for assigning priorities to substituents and describing the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in stereochemical structures. It compares directly attached atoms by atomic number, uses mass number to distinguish isotopes, and examines successively attached atoms when a priority tie remains; these rankings support the assignment of R or S configurations at stereocenters and E or Z configurations at double bonds. In chemistry, CIP nomenclature provides an unambiguous language for communicating molecular structure, interpreting stereoisomers, and reporting relationships between compounds in organic synthesis, analytical characterization, medicinal chemistry, and biological research.
