Lucas Test

The Lucas test is a qualitative chemical test used to classify alcohols as primary, secondary, or tertiary by comparing how readily they form insoluble alkyl chlorides. In the test, an alcohol reacts with Lucas reagent, a mixture of concentrated hydrochloric acid and anhydrous zinc chloride; the zinc chloride activates the hydroxyl group, while chloride ions replace it, producing turbidity as the organic chloride separates from the aqueous mixture. Tertiary alcohols typically turn cloudy immediately, secondary alcohols react within several minutes, and primary alcohols show little or no turbidity at room temperature. The test provides a rapid preliminary identification of alcohol structure in organic chemistry.

In vitro assays to measure virus replication have been greatly improved by the development of recombinant RNA viruses expressing luciferase or other enzymes capable of bioluminescence. Here we detail a high-throughput screening pipeline that combines such recombinant strains of measles and chikungunya viruses to isolate broad-spectrum antivirals from chemical libraries.

Identifying Alcohols - Concepts

2020

Alcohols Alcohols are organic compounds that are amongst the most recognizable and familiar, as they have wide-ranging applications and uses in everyday life. Alcohols are organic molecules containing a hydroxyl functional group connected to an alkyl or aryl group (ROH). If the hydroxyl carbon only has a single R group, it is known as primary alcohol. If it has two R groups, it is a secondary alcohol, and if it has three R groups, it is a tertiary alcohol. Like many other organic compounds,...

You'll test known alcohols alongside the unknown alcohol as examples of positive and negative results for each test. The four known alcohols are 1-butanol, a primary alcohol, 2-butanol, a secondary alcohol, 2-methyl-2-propanol, a tertiary...
