Nanoparticle Aggregation

Nanoparticle aggregation is the clustering of nanoscale particles into larger assemblies, a chemical process that can alter suspension stability, surface reactivity, optical behavior, and material performance. Aggregation occurs when attractive forces, particularly van der Waals interactions, overcome repulsive forces that keep particles dispersed; changes in pH, ionic strength, solvent composition, or surface coatings can shift this balance, while electrostatic and steric stabilization can reduce clustering. In chemistry, understanding nanoparticle aggregation supports the design of stable colloids, catalysts, sensors, and functional nanomaterials. Controlling aggregation also helps researchers interpret particle size, transport, reactivity, and performance in laboratory and industrial systems.

Here, we present a protocol for the in situ synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) within the interlayer space of layered titanate films without the aggregation of AuNPs. No spectral change was observed even after 4 months. The synthesized material has expected applications in catalysis, photo-catalysis, and the development of cost-effective plasmonic devices.

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Concrete and asphalt are by far the most common construction materials used today. Concrete is a composite material consisting of cement, water, air, coarse aggregate, and fine aggregates. Fine aggregates are typically sands and coarse aggregates are natural or crushed rocks. Chemical admixtures to modify certain specific properties are also commonly used (i.e., superplasticizers to make the...

A Magnetic Nanoparticle-Based Immunoassay Using a Microfluidic Device

2025

This video demonstrates a microfluidic system for a magnetic nanoparticle-based immunoassay. The detection system utilizes a microfluidic device incorporating a magnetic trap within its channels. Pre-formed immunocomplexes, comprised of antigen-coated magnetic nanoparticles bound to primary and peroxidase-conjugated secondary antibodies, are introduced into the channels. The immunocomplexes become captured in the porous magnetic trap upon applying an external magnetic field. Using a fluorogenic...
