Nitrilotriacetic Acid Complex

Nitrilotriacetic acid complexes are coordination compounds in which nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), a multidentate ligand, binds a metal ion; they provide a useful model for understanding chelation and metal speciation in chemistry. NTA coordinates through its nitrogen donor and three carboxylate oxygen donors, forming stable chelate rings whose composition and strength depend on metal identity, pH, and competing ligands. These complexes support analytical methods for metal-ion detection and separation, help control metal availability in aqueous systems, and underpin affinity materials such as nickel-NTA media for isolating histidine-tagged proteins. Their structures and stability also inform coordination chemistry, environmental analysis, and biochemical research.

Hydrolysis of a Ni-Schiff-Base Complex Using Conditions Suitable for Retention of Acid-labile Protecting Groups

2017

Here, we present an efficient hydrolysis and subsequent Fmoc protection of an amino acid isolated from a Ni-Schiff-base complex. Hydrolysis conditions presented here are suitable for use when retention of acid-labile side-chain protecting groups is required. This technique may be adaptable to a variety of unnatural amino acid substrates.

Formation of Complex Ions

2020

A type of Lewis acid-base chemistry involves the formation of a complex ion (or a coordination complex) comprising a central atom, typically a transition metal cation, surrounded by ions or molecules called ligands. These ligands can be neutral molecules like H2O or NH3, or ions such as CN− or OH−. Often, the ligands act as Lewis bases, donating a pair of electrons to the central atom. These types of Lewis acid-base reactions are examples of a broad subdiscipline called coordination...

Qualitative Identification of Carboxylic Acids, Boronic Acids, and Amines Using Cruciform Fluorophores

2013

Cross-conjugated cruciform fluorophores based on 1,4-distyryl-2,5-bis(arylethynyl)benzene and benzobisoxazole nuclei can be used to qualitatively identify diverse Lewis acidic and Lewis basic analytes. This method relies on the differences in emission colors of the cruciforms that are observed upon analyte addition. Structurally closely related species can be distinguished from each other.

2025

This protocol details an in vitro assay for measuring cellular lipid uptake in endothelial cells upon stimulation with BODIPY-C12 and BODIPY-C16 fluorescent analogs of long-chain and very long-chain saturated fatty acids. This method is efficient and adaptable to other cell types, offering a useful approach for studying lipid metabolism.

Measuring Retinoic Acid Levels in Neurospheres Using a Retinoic Acid Reporter Cell Line
