Compound Structure Identification

Compound structure identification is the process of determining a molecule’s atoms, connectivity, functional groups, and three-dimensional arrangement from experimental evidence, a foundation for understanding chemical behavior and confirming compound identity. Researchers combine molecular formulas and mass spectrometry with infrared spectroscopy, which detects bond vibrations, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, which uses chemical shifts and spin-spin coupling to map the local environments and connections of nuclei. Comparing these complementary signals with reference data or predicted structures helps distinguish isomers, verify synthesized products, characterize natural substances, and support drug development, materials science, forensic analysis, and reaction mechanism studies.

Lewis Structures of Molecular Compounds and Polyatomic Ions

2020

To draw Lewis structures for complicated molecules and molecular ions, it is helpful to follow a step-by-step procedure as outlined: Determine the total number of valence (outer shell) electrons. For cations, subtract one electron for each positive charge. For anions, add one electron for each negative charge. Draw a skeleton structure of the molecule or ion, arranging the atoms around a central atom. (Generally, the least electronegative element should be placed in the center.) Connect...

Organic Compounds

2020

All living things are formed mostly of carbon compounds called organic compounds. The category of organic compounds includes both natural and synthetic compounds that contain carbon. Although a single, precise definition has yet to be identified by the chemistry community, most agree that a defining trait of organic molecules is the presence of carbon as the principal element, bonded to hydrogen and other carbon atoms. However, some carbon-containing compounds such as carbonates, cyanides, and...

Compound Administration I

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN As many research protocols require that a substance be injected into an animal, the route of delivery and the amount of the substance must be accurately determined. There are several routes of administration available in the mouse and rat. Which route to use is determined by several factors of the substance to be injected: the pH of the solution, the volume required for the desired dosage, and...
