Gerd

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic condition in which stomach contents repeatedly flow back into the esophagus, causing symptoms or tissue injury. It commonly develops when the lower esophageal sphincter relaxes inappropriately or does not close effectively, allowing acidic material to irritate the esophageal lining; impaired clearance and hiatal hernia can contribute. Typical manifestations include heartburn, regurgitation, chest discomfort, and sometimes cough or swallowing difficulty. Clinical evaluation guides treatment with lifestyle measures, acid-suppressing medicines, or, in selected cases, procedures. Understanding GERD supports accurate diagnosis, symptom control, prevention of complications such as esophagitis, and monitoring for Barrett’s esophagus.

The prediction of the coreceptor usage of HIV-1 is required for the administration of a new class of antiretroviral drugs, i.e. coreceptor antagonists. It can be performed by sequence analysis of the env gene and subsequent interpretation through an internet based interpretation system (geno2pheno[coreceptor]).
