Physician Orders

Physician orders are documented instructions from an authorized clinician that direct a patient’s diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, or care activities, making them a central link between clinical decisions and coordinated care. They communicate what should be done, for whom, when, and under which conditions, and may specify medications, laboratory tests, imaging, procedures, precautions, or changes in therapy. Healthcare professionals review each order for completeness, clinical appropriateness, timing, and potential interactions before carrying it out and recording the result. In clinical practice, accurate physician orders support patient safety, continuity across care teams, regulatory compliance, and timely evaluation of treatment outcomes.
