Public Health Emergencies

Public health emergencies are acute events that threaten population health and require coordinated action beyond routine health-system capacity. They may arise from infectious disease outbreaks, natural disasters, chemical exposures, or other hazards, prompting surveillance, rapid risk assessment, case detection, triage, infection prevention, and emergency communication. In clinical settings, response teams use these processes to identify threats, protect patients and healthcare workers, allocate limited resources, and maintain essential care. Effective preparedness and response can reduce transmission, prevent avoidable illness and deaths, strengthen coordination across health agencies, and improve resilience during future crises.
