Secondary Prevention

Secondary prevention is a clinical strategy that detects disease or injury at an early stage and intervenes before it progresses, causes complications, or recurs. It works through risk assessment, screening, early diagnosis, and timely treatment that target an existing but often unrecognized condition or its modifiable risk factors. In practice, secondary prevention can identify early disease, initiate appropriate therapy, and support monitoring or follow-up to limit functional loss and improve outcomes. It complements primary prevention, which aims to stop disease before it develops, and tertiary prevention, which focuses on reducing disability after established illness. This framework guides clinical decision-making and population health programs.
