Semantic Barriers

Semantic barriers are communication obstacles that arise when people assign different meanings to the same words, symbols, or clinical information, potentially affecting understanding and decision-making. In healthcare, they occur when jargon, ambiguous terminology, language differences, or varying interpretations of symptoms prevent accurate transfer of meaning between patients, clinicians, and healthcare systems. These barriers can distort medical histories, informed consent, diagnosis, treatment instructions, and documentation, while also limiting effective communication across specialties and electronic health records. Identifying and reducing semantic barriers through plain language, clarification, standardized terminology, and qualified interpretation supports patient safety, equitable care, and more reliable clinical research.

Language: The N400 in Semantic Incongruity

2023

Source: Laboratories of Sarah I. Gimbel and Jonas T. Kaplan— University of Southern California Understanding language is one of the most complex cognitive tasks that humans are capable of. Given the incredible amount of possible choices when combining individual words to form meaning in sentences, it is crucial that the brain is able to identify when words form coherent combinations and when an anomaly appears that undermines meaning. Extensive research has shown that certain scalp-recorded...

The aim of the protocol is to present an optimized procedure for the establishment of an in vitro blood-brain barrier (BBB) model based on primary porcine brain endothelial cells (pBECs). The model shows high reproducibility, high tightness, and is suitable for studies of transport and intracellular trafficking in drug discovery.

Physiological Barriers

Physiological barriers are semi-permeable cellular structures restricting drug diffusion into intracellular compartments and tissues. There are six types of physiological barriers: blood endothelial, cell membrane, blood-brain, blood-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), blood-placenta, and blood-testis barriers. The blood endothelial barrier is the most porous of these. It allows all small ionized, un-ionized, and lipophilic molecules to pass through the endothelial lining into the interstitial space...

Using Adeno-associated Virus as a Tool to Study Retinal Barriers in Disease

To investigate the blood-retinal barrier permeability and the inner limiting membrane integrity in animal models of retinal disease, we used several adeno-associated virus (AAV) variants as tools to label retinal neurons and glia. Virus mediated reporter gene expression is then used as an indicator of retinal barrier permeability.
