Drosophila Viability Assay

Drosophila viability assay is a quantitative method for determining whether fruit fly embryos, larvae, or adults survive under defined genetic, environmental, or chemical conditions, making it useful for linking developmental perturbations to organismal outcomes. The assay typically compares the number or proportion of individuals that reach a specified life stage in treated and control groups, often after exposure to a mutation, temperature change, or compound. In developmental biology, viability measurements reveal essential gene functions, stage-specific sensitivities, and toxic effects, while controlled crosses and standardized scoring improve reproducibility. Results can support genetic screening, developmental toxicity studies, and evaluation of candidate interventions.

Therapeutic compounds are often first examined in vitro with viability assays. Blind cell counts by a human observer can be highly sensitive to small changes in cell number but do not assess function. Computerized viability assays, as described here, can assess both structure and function in an objective manner.
