Follicular Epithelium

Follicular epithelium is a layer of epithelial cells that surrounds and supports a developing follicle, a specialized structure found in several organs. During development, these cells proliferate, differentiate, and communicate with adjacent cells through secreted signals and direct cell-cell interactions, coordinating follicle growth, organization, and functional maturation. In ovarian development, follicular epithelial cells surround the oocyte and form an essential microenvironment that regulates its survival and maturation. Studying this tissue helps researchers understand epithelial organization, cell signaling, tissue patterning, and reproductive development, while also informing investigations of infertility, developmental disorders, and follicle-based disease.
