Mesenchymal Stem Cell Expansion

Mesenchymal stem cell expansion is the controlled increase of mesenchymal stem cell numbers in culture while preserving their capacity for self-renewal and multilineage differentiation. Cells are isolated from a tissue, maintained on culture-treated surfaces in nutrient media, and periodically passaged before reaching confluence; defined growth conditions support proliferation while helping retain key cellular characteristics. In developmental biology, expansion provides sufficient cells to investigate how signaling environments regulate differentiation into osteogenic, chondrogenic, and adipogenic lineages. The approach supports studies of tissue formation, stem cell behavior, disease modeling, and regenerative medicine, although extended culture can alter cell phenotype and developmental potential.
