Bulk Hole Mobility

Bulk hole mobility measures how readily positive charge carriers move through the volume of a semiconductor when an electric field is applied, making it a key indicator of transport performance. Holes, which represent vacancies in the valence band, drift through the crystal, while phonons, impurities, defects, and structural disorder scatter them; mobility is commonly expressed as drift velocity per unit electric field in cm²/V·s. In engineering, bulk hole mobility supports the evaluation and optimization of semiconductor materials for transistors, photovoltaic devices, sensors, and other electronic components, while helping researchers distinguish volume transport from effects at interfaces or contacts.

Bulk Modulus

2025

The bulk modulus is a scientific term used to describe a material's resistance to uniform compression. It is the proportionality constant that links a change in pressure to the resulting relative volume change. This concept becomes clearer when an isotropic material element is visualized as a cube of unit volume. When this cube is subjected to normal stresses, it undergoes deformation, changing its shape into a rectangular parallelepiped with a different volume. The discrepancy between this...

Detection of Black Holes

2023

Although black holes were theoretically postulated in the 1920s, they remained outside the domain of observational astronomy until the 1970s. Their closest cousins are neutron stars, which are composed almost entirely of neutrons packed against each other, making them extremely dense. A neutron star has the same mass as the Sun but its diameter is only a few kilometers. Therefore, the escape velocity from their surface is close to the speed of light. Not until the 1960s, when the first neutron...

Electrophoretic Mobility Shift Assay (EMSA)

2023

The electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) is a biochemical procedure used to elucidate binding between proteins and nucleic acids. In this assay a radiolabeled nucleic acid and test protein are mixed. Binding is determined via gel electrophoresis which separates components based on mass, charge, and conformation. This video shows the concepts of EMSA and a general procedure, including gel and protein preparation, binding, electrophoresis, and detection. Applications covered in this video...

Mobile Marketing

2024

As consumers increasingly rely on smartphones and other mobile devices for browsing, communication, and shopping, mobile marketing has become essential in today's digital world. Brands must adjust their strategies to engage users where they spend most of their time, which is on mobile screens. Understanding mobile user behavior is crucial for successful mobile marketing. Mobile users typically interact with their devices briefly and frequently throughout the day. They prefer content that is...

2015

We describe an endpoint digital assay for quantifying nucleic acids with a simplified (analog) readout. We measure bulk fluorescence of droplet-based digital assays using a standard qPCR machine rather than specialized instrumentation and confirm our results by microscopy.
