Construction Joints Compaction

Construction joints and compaction are essential practices in concrete construction that control how separate concrete placements bond and achieve the required strength, density, and durability. A construction joint forms when fresh concrete is placed against hardened or partially hardened concrete, while compaction uses vibration or tamping to remove entrapped air and consolidate the material around reinforcement and within the formwork. Proper joint preparation, placement timing, surface cleaning, and thorough compaction reduce weak planes, honeycombing, water penetration, and premature cracking. These practices support reliable load transfer and service performance in slabs, beams, columns, pavements, foundations, and other engineered structures.

Compact Bone

2025

Most bones contain compact and spongy osseous tissue, but their distribution and concentration vary based on the bone's overall function. Compact bone, also called cortical bone, is the denser, stronger of the two types of bone tissue. It is found under the periosteum and in the diaphyses of long bones, where it provides support and protection. The microscopic structural unit of compact bone is called an osteon, or haversian system. Each osteon is composed of concentric rings of calcified...

Construction of a Compact Low-Cost Radiation Shield for Air-Temperature Sensors in Ecological Field Studies

With the advent of small, low-cost environmental sensors, it is now possible to deploy high-density networks of sensors to measure hyper localized temperature variation. Here, we provide a detailed methodology for constructing a compact version of a previously described custom-fabricated radiation shield for use with inexpensive thermochrons.

Compacting Factor test

The compacting factor test is a method used to assess the workability of concrete. It is especially suitable for concrete mixes containing aggregates up to one and a half inches in size. This test involves specialized equipment consisting of two truncated cone-shaped hoppers and a cylinder, all with polished interior surfaces to minimize friction. The procedure begins by placing concrete into the upper hopper without any compaction. Once filled, the bottom door of this hopper is opened,...

Cyanobacterial Culture Synchronization and DNA Compaction Driven by Light-Dark Cycles

(2018)This video demonstrates the synchronous cultivation of cyanobacteria under light-dark cycles to study circadian-regulated DNA compaction. Fluorescence microscopy reveals condensed DNA at defined time points, confirming cell cycle alignment across the population.

Structural Joints: Fibrous Joints

Fibrous joints are a type of joint where the bones are connected by fibrous connective tissue. These joints provide stability and minimal to no movement between the articulating bones. There are three types of fibrous joints. Suture All the bones of the skull, except for the mandible, are joined to each other by a fibrous joint called a suture. The fibrous connective tissue found at a suture strongly unites the adjacent skull bones and thus helps to protect the brain and form the face. In...
