Leading Lagging

Leading and lagging describe the phase relationship between alternating-current voltage and current, a fundamental concept for analyzing electrical systems and power flow. In a predominantly capacitive circuit, current leads voltage because capacitor charging causes current to respond ahead of the voltage waveform; in an inductive circuit, current lags as magnetic fields build and release energy. Engineers use these relationships to calculate power factor, assess real and reactive power, and improve system efficiency through compensation, such as capacitor banks for inductive loads. Understanding leading and lagging behavior supports the design and operation of motors, transformers, power grids, and other AC equipment.

Phase-lead and Phase-lag Controllers

Understanding the working function of different types of controllers can be illustrated with practical analogies, such as adjusting a stereo's volume equalizer. Cranking up the bass involves a phase-lead controller, which functions as a high-pass filter, while increasing the treble uses a phase-lag controller, which acts as a low-pass filter. PD controllers, similar to high-pass filters, enhance the system's response to high-frequency components. PI controllers, akin to low-pass filters, manage...

ScanLag is a high-throughput method for measuring the delay in growth, namely lag time, as well as the growth rate of colonies for thousands of cells in parallel. Screening using ScanLag enables the discrimination between long lag-time and slow growth at the level of a single variant.

Lagging Strand Synthesis

2023

During replication, the complementary strands in double-stranded DNA are synthesized at different rates. Replication first begins on the leading strand. Replication starts later, occurs more slowly, and proceeds discontinuously on the lagging strand. There are several major differences between synthesis of the leading strand and synthesis of the lagging strand. 1) Leading strand synthesis happens in the direction of replication fork opening, whereas lagging strand synthesis happens in the...

Lead Analysis of Soil Using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Lead occurs naturally in soil, in levels ranging from 10-50 ppm. However, with the widespread use of lead in paint and gasoline in addition to contamination by industry, urban soils often have concentrations of lead significantly greater than background levels – up to 10,000 ppm in some places. Ongoing problems arise from the fact that lead does not biodegrade, and instead remains in the soil. Serious health risks...
