Metal Electrode Definition

A metal electrode is a conductive component that transfers electrical charge between a metal and another medium, such as an electrolyte, semiconductor, or biological material. Its operation depends on mobile electrons in the metal and, at an electrochemical interface, redox reactions that convert electronic current into ionic current or the reverse. In engineering, metal electrodes support electrochemical sensors, batteries, fuel cells, corrosion studies, semiconductor devices, and electrical stimulation systems. Electrode material, surface area, geometry, and interface chemistry influence conductivity, reaction rates, selectivity, stability, and signal quality, making electrode design central to efficient energy conversion, measurement, and device performance.
