Nano Hardness Measurement

Nano hardness measurement is a materials characterization technique that determines the resistance of a surface to permanent deformation at nanometer-scale depths, making it valuable for evaluating thin and delicate engineering materials. A sharp indenter, typically made of diamond, is pressed into the sample under a controlled load while the instrument records penetration depth; analysis of the load-displacement curve separates elastic and plastic responses to calculate hardness and often elastic modulus. The method supports quality control and research on coatings, thin films, microelectronic components, and surface treatments, where conventional hardness tests may probe too deeply or lack sufficient spatial resolution.

Rockwell Hardness Test and the Effect of Treatment on Steel

2023

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Hardness testing is one of the most universally valuable mechanical tests available to engineers, as it is both simple and relatively inexpensive for the wealth of information and data it produces. Hardness testing, generally in the form of a surface penetration test, is both quicker and less destructive than tensile testing. Hardness provides a linear relationship with tensile strength over a...

Toughness and Hardness of Aggregate

2024

Toughness and hardness are critical properties of aggregate materials used in concrete, particularly on pavement surfaces and industrial flooring subjected to heavy loads. Toughness is defined as the aggregate's resistance to failure by impact and is measured by the aggregate impact value (AIV). For this, the aggregate impact value test is performed, wherein the impact is delivered by a standard hammer, which falls freely under its own weight onto the aggregates. The aggregates fragment in the...
