Thin Film Preparation

Thin film preparation is the controlled fabrication of extremely thin material layers on a substrate, enabling engineers to tailor surface, optical, electrical, mechanical, or chemical properties. During deposition, atoms, molecules, or particles reach the substrate through processes such as physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, or solution-based coating, where nucleation and film growth depend on factors including pressure, temperature, precursor chemistry, and deposition rate. Engineers use thin films in semiconductor devices, sensors, solar cells, optical components, protective coatings, and energy-storage technologies. Precise control of thickness, composition, uniformity, and adhesion supports reliable device performance and advanced functional materials.

Source: Logan G. Kiefer, Andrew R. Falkowski, and Taylor D. Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electroplating is a process that uses electric current to reduce dissolved metal cations so that they form a thin coating on an electrode. Other thin film deposition techniques include chemical vapor deposition (CVD), spin coating, dip coating, and sputter deposition among others. CVD uses a gas-phase precursor of the element to be...

Sample preparation for cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) is a significant bottleneck in the structure determination workflow of this method. Here, we provide detailed methods for using an easy-to-use, three-dimensionally printed block for the preparation of support films to stabilize samples for transmission EM studies.

We describe a method for the fabrication of large-area (up to 13 cm diameter) and ultrathin (as thin as 8 nm) polymer films. Instead of using a sacrificial interlayer to delaminate the film from its substrate, we use a self-limiting surface treatment suitable for arbitrarily large areas.
