Cytoplasm Carbon Quantification

Cytoplasm carbon quantification is the measurement of carbon contained within the cytoplasmic fraction of cells, providing an estimate of cellular carbon biomass and its distribution in environmental samples. The analysis generally separates or identifies cytoplasmic material, measures its carbon content with a calibrated chemical or instrumental method, and reports the result relative to cell number, sample mass, or volume. In environmental research, these measurements help assess microbial biomass, carbon storage, growth, and transformation within soils, sediments, and aquatic systems. They can also support studies of nutrient cycling, ecosystem function, and the movement of carbon through microbial communities.

In this study, the main purpose was to monitor the cellular uptake and eventual exocytosis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). From this perspective, we proposed here a unique method using multispectral imaging flow cytometry allowing a quantification and localization of CNTs in a statistically relevant number of cells.

The cytoplasm consists of organelles and a framework of protein scaffolds called the cytoskeleton suspended in an aqueous solution, the cytosol. The cytosol is a rich broth of water, ions, salts, and various organic molecules.Protein Folding and MisfoldingThe cytoplasm is the location for several cellular processes, including protein synthesis and folding. The aqueous nature of the cytosol promotes protein folding such that the hydrophobic amino acid side chains are buried in the protein core...

In this protocol, we describe the direct cytoplasmic microinjection of cytochrome c protein into fibroblasts and primary sympathetic neurons. This technique allows for the introduction of cytochrome c protein into the cytoplasm of cells and mimics the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria, which occurs during apoptosis.
