Flower Thrips Sampling

Flower thrips sampling is a monitoring technique used to detect and estimate thrips populations in flowers, helping assess plant health and environmental conditions. The process typically involves selecting representative blossoms, dislodging or collecting the small insects, and counting them with methods such as flower tapping, direct inspection, or traps. Consistent sampling across plant species, locations, and time points can reveal population density, distribution, and seasonal changes. These observations support ecological studies, crop and ornamental plant management, and evaluation of how environmental conditions influence thrips abundance and activity.

Pollination and Flower Structure

2020

Flowers are the reproductive, seed-producing structures of angiosperms. Typically, flowers consist of sepals, petals, stamens, and carpels. Sepals and petals are the vegetative flower organs. Stamens and carpels are the reproductive organs. Flowers must be pollinated to produce seeds. In angiosperms, pollination is the transfer of pollen from the anther of the stamen (the male structure) to the stigma of the carpel (the female structure). Flowers may be self-pollinated or cross-pollinated.

Here, we present a protocol to force flowering in mandarin trees under phytotron conditions. Water stress, high illuminance and a simulated spring photoperiod allowed viable flowers to be obtained in a short period of time. This methodology allows researchers to have several flowering periods in 1 year.
