High-pressure Vessel

A high-pressure vessel is a sealed, engineered container designed to hold gases or liquids at pressures substantially above atmospheric levels, enabling controlled studies and industrial processes. Its thick, pressure-rated walls, secure closures, seals, and safety systems resist internal stresses, while monitoring and pressure-relief devices help control operating conditions and prevent hazardous overpressure. In environmental science, these vessels support experiments involving gas storage, supercritical fluids, hydrothermal conditions, pollutant treatment, and carbon dioxide behavior. By reproducing elevated-pressure environments safely, they help researchers measure material properties, evaluate treatment processes, and develop technologies for emissions reduction and resource recovery.

Operation of High-pressure Reactor Vessels

2023

Robert M Rioux, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA The use of gases in a synthetic chemistry laboratory is essential for carrying out a variety of highly facile and atom economical transformations. Reactions such as hydrogenation, oxidation, and amination require the use of gases like hydrogen, oxygen, and ammonia. Due to the poor solubility of these gases in typical reactant solutions, high pressures are necessary to achieve a meaningful reaction rate. Not only are these gases...

2013

The laser heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron micro-diffraction techniques allows researchers to explore the nature and properties of new phases of matter at extreme pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. Heterogeneous samples can be characterized in situ under high pressure by 2D mapping and combined powder, single-crystal and multigrain diffraction approaches.

Achieving Moderate Pressures in Sealed Vessels Using Dry Ice As a Solid CO2 Source

Here we present a protocol for performing reactions in simple reaction vessels under low-to-moderate pressures of CO2. The reactions can be performed in a variety of vessels simply by administering the carbon dioxide in the form of dry ice, without the need for costly or elaborate equipment or set-ups.

Measurement of Pulmonary Artery Pressure in Rats Using Right Heart Catheterization

2025

The protocol provides a detailed introduction to the experience of using the right heart catheterization method to detect pulmonary artery pressure in rats, which will help to obtain accurate data more efficiently and improve the success rate of the experiment. This method also improves the reproducibility of experiments across different laboratories.

Stability of Floating Vessels

Source: Alexander S Rattner and Kevin Rao Li Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA The objective of this experiment is to demonstrate the phenomenon of stability of floating vessels - the ability to self-right when rolled over to the side by some external force. Careful design of hull shapes and internal mass distribution enables seagoing vessels to be stable with low drafts (submerged depth of hull), improving vessel...
