Pellet Formation

Pellet formation is the aggregation of particles, cells, or microorganisms into compact, spherical structures, an important process in environmental engineering and biotechnology. It occurs when suspended materials adhere through physical contact, microbial growth, and extracellular polymeric substances that create a stable matrix; mixing, nutrient availability, and settling conditions influence pellet size and strength. In wastewater treatment, microbial pellets can concentrate biomass, improve solid-liquid separation, and support efficient removal of organic matter and nutrients. Similar structures are relevant to anaerobic digestion and environmental bioremediation, where dense microbial communities may enhance process stability, treatment performance, and resource recovery.

Microplastics act as vector of potentially toxic organic contaminants with unpredictable effects. This protocol describes an alternative methodology for assessing the levels of organochlorine pesticides adsorbed on plastic pellets and identifying the polymer chemical structure. The focus is on pressurized fluid extraction and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

Liquid-grown Streptomyces cultures are characterized by mycelial pellets that are heterogeneous in size. We here describe a method to analyze and sort such pellets in a high-throughput manner. These pellets can be used for further analyses, which will provide leads to understand and control growth heterogeneity.
