Bubble Trap

A bubble trap is a device or fluidic structure that removes gas bubbles from liquid streams, helping maintain stable flow in laboratory and diagnostic systems. It works by directing liquid through an enlarged chamber or separation pathway where buoyancy, reduced flow velocity, and controlled venting allow bubbles to collect and exit while the liquid continues downstream. In immunology and infection research, bubble traps support microfluidic immunoassays, cell-based experiments, and biosensors by preventing channel blockage, uneven reagent delivery, and imaging artifacts. Reliable bubble removal improves assay consistency and helps researchers obtain more reproducible measurements from small-volume biological samples.

Excess Pressure Inside a Drop and a Bubble

2023

The shape of a small drop of liquid can be considered spherical, neglecting the effect of gravity. This drop can further be considered as two equal hemispherical drops put together due to surface tension. The forces acting on the spherical drop are due to the pressure of the liquid inside the drop, the pressure due to air outside the drop, and the force due to the surface tension acting on the two hemispherical drops. where γ corresponds to the surface tension. Recalling that the force per...

Social Traps

Social traps are negative situations where people get caught in a direction or relationship that later proves to be unpleasant, with no easy way to back out of or avoid. The concept was orignally introduced by John Platt who applied psychology to Garrett Hardin's "Tragedy of the Commons", where in New England herd owners could let their cattle graze in the common ground. This situation seems like a good idea, but an individual could have an advantage. If they owned more cows, the larger...

Source: Vy M. Dong and Jan Riedel, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA A Dean-Stark trap is a special piece of glassware, which allows the collection of water during a reaction through an azeotropic distillation. The desire to collect water from a reaction can have various reasons. It can drive the equilibria in reactions, where water is formed as a byproduct. According to Le Chatelier's principle, a change in temperature, pressure, concentration, or volume will cause...
