Il-1 Beta Secretion

IL-1 beta secretion is the regulated release of interleukin-1β, a potent inflammatory cytokine that coordinates innate immune responses to infection and tissue damage. Microbial or danger signals first induce pro-IL-1β production through pattern-recognition receptor signaling, while a second activation signal assembles an inflammasome that activates caspase-1; caspase-1 cleaves pro-IL-1β into mature cytokine and enables its unconventional release from immune cells. Measuring IL-1β secretion helps researchers characterize host-pathogen interactions, inflammasome activity, and inflammatory disease mechanisms. These studies also support evaluation of immunomodulatory therapies and biomarkers of dysregulated inflammation.

Transcellular protein interactions are important determinants of pancreatic beta-cell function. Detailed here is a method—adapted from a coculture model of synaptogenesis—for investigating how specific transmembrane proteins influence insulin secretion. Transfected HEK293 cells express proteins of interest; beta cells do not need to be transfected or otherwise directly perturbed.

Beta

2024

Beta is a crucial metric in finance used to assess an investment's risk and expected return relative to the overall market. It is calculated as the slope of the line in a scatterplot that compares the returns of an individual stock to the returns of the market benchmark, typically represented by a broad market index. Beta quantifies how much a stock's price moves in response to market movements, providing insight into its volatility and systematic risk. A beta of one indicates that the stock's...

This protocol allows one to identify factors that modulate functional beta cell mass to find potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of diabetes. The protocol consists of a streamlined method to assess islet replication and beta cell function in isolated rat islets following manipulation of gene expression with adenoviruses.

Characterization of pH-Dependent Reversible Self-Assembly of Amyloid Beta 1-40-Coated Gold Colloids

2025

Here, we present a systematic method describing the quasi-reversible self-assembly of the amyloid beta 1-40 (Aβ1-40)-coated 20 nm gold aggregates. The nano-size-dependent quasi-reversible networking between peptides was correlated with specific amino acids or sections of the Aβ1-40 monomer.
