Intestinal Analysis

Intestinal analysis is the systematic examination of intestinal structure, function, microbial communities, and immune activity to understand how the gut maintains health and responds to disease. Researchers assess tissue architecture, epithelial integrity, inflammatory cells, barrier function, and microorganisms using complementary approaches such as microscopy, immunostaining, culture, and molecular profiling. In immunology and infection research, these measurements help reveal how pathogens interact with the intestinal barrier, how host defenses are activated, and how dysbiosis or tissue damage develops. The resulting data support disease characterization, evaluation of experimental interventions, and the development of strategies to protect mucosal health.

2023

In this video, we demonstrate a technique to isolate whole crypts from a mouse’s small intestine. The isolated whole crypts can be used to propagate long-lived and self-renewing 3D organoids in vitro.

We describe a novel surgical method for catheterizing 'intestinal loops' within the ileum of sheep. Once animals have recovered from surgery and have cleared antibiotics and analgesics, multiple treatments can be deposited directly in loops via the catheters.

Functional Assessment of Intestinal Motility and Gut Wall Inflammation in Rodents: Analyses in a Standardized Model of Intestinal Manipulation

Postoperative ileus (POI) is a complication of abdominal surgery leading to increased morbidity and a prolonged hospital stay. Because prophylactic or therapeutic strategies are lacking intensified research is necessary. Therefore we established a standardized and feasible mouse model to investigate the pathophysiology of POI and to study potential therapeutic options.
