Microtiter Plate Reader

A microtiter plate reader is a laboratory instrument that measures optical signals from samples arranged in multiwell plates, enabling rapid, parallel analysis of biochemical and cellular reactions. Depending on the assay, it directs selected wavelengths of light into each well and detects absorbance, fluorescence, or luminescence produced by chemical, enzymatic, or biological activity. In immunology and infection research, plate readers support ELISA-based detection of antibodies, antigens, and cytokines, as well as measurements of microbial growth, cell viability, and immune-cell responses. Automated readings improve throughput, quantitative comparison, and reproducibility in diagnostic studies, drug screening, and host-pathogen investigations.

A Microtiter Plate Method to Assess the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of an Antibiotic

2025

This video demonstrates a microtiter plate-based method for determining the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of test antibiotics against bacteria. Upon adding a suspension of the bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa to a microtiter plate containing serial dilutions of a test antibiotic, and an inhibitor of the production of pyomelanin by the bacteria, the optical density of the wells is measured to compute the minimum inhibitory concentration of the antibiotic, and the impact of the...
