Rna Virus Fidelity

RNA virus fidelity is the accuracy with which an RNA virus copies its genome during replication, a property that shapes genetic diversity, adaptation, and disease potential. It depends primarily on the selectivity of the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, the availability of nucleotides, and, in some viruses such as coronaviruses, proofreading by an associated exonuclease that removes misincorporated bases. Fidelity influences the formation of mutant populations, allowing viruses to balance rapid evolution with preservation of essential genetic information. In immunology and infection research, measuring or manipulating fidelity helps clarify immune escape, antiviral responses, virulence, and the development of attenuated vaccine strains.

RNA viruses are categorized into positive-strand, negative-strand, or double-stranded groups based on their genomic structure and replication mechanisms. This classification dictates how they exploit host cellular machinery for protein synthesis and replication. Some RNA viruses also utilize reverse transcription as part of their life cycle, further diversifying their replication strategies.Positive-Strand RNA VirusesPositive-strand RNA viruses have genomes that function directly as messenger...
