Surface Swabbing

Surface swabbing is a sampling method that collects microorganisms, cells, or biological residues from an environmental, skin, or equipment surface for laboratory analysis. A sterile swab is applied across a defined area using consistent pressure and movement, then placed in transport medium to preserve the sample before culture, microscopy, antigen testing, or nucleic acid amplification. In immunology and infection research, surface swabbing helps detect pathogens, assess contamination, monitor hygiene and infection-control measures, and investigate transmission pathways. Results can reveal where organisms persist and support evaluation of disinfectants, clinical practices, and public-health interventions.

Source: Patras, K. A. & Doran, K. S. A Murine Model of Group B Streptococcus Vaginal Colonization. J. Vis. Exp. (2016)This video demonstrates the quantification of vaginal Group B Streptococcus (GBS) load in a mouse model using swabbing and chromogenic culture. It outlines the steps involved in sample collection, plating, and colony counting to quantify GBS load in the mouse vaginal lumen.

We present a method to control the interfacial energy of a liquid metal in an electrolyte via electrochemical deposition (or removal) of a surface oxide layer. This simple method can control the capillary behavior of gallium-based liquid metals by tuning the interfacial energy rapidly, significantly, and reversibly using modest voltages.

Surface Tension and Surface Energy

When a paint brush is immersed in water, the bristles wave freely inside the water. When it is taken out, the bristles stick together. The reason behind this effect is surface tension. Consider a beaker filled with liquid. The bulk molecules in the liquid experience equal attractive forces on all sides with the surrounding molecules. However, the surface molecules experience a net attractive force downward due to the bulk molecules. The surface of the liquid behaves like a stretched membrane,...
