Symbiotic Development

Symbiotic development is the establishment and maturation of a close association between different organisms, in which reciprocal interactions influence growth, physiology, and survival. In host-microbe systems, microbial molecules and host-derived signals shape colonization, while the immune system distinguishes compatible partners from potential pathogens and adjusts inflammatory responses to maintain tissue homeostasis. Studying this process in immunology and infection clarifies how beneficial microbial communities mature, how disrupted interactions can increase disease susceptibility, and how microbial or immune interventions might restore balanced host-microbe relationships.

This video will demonstrate how to obtain hemocytes (blood cells) from the Hawaiian bobtail squid, Euprymna scolopes for use in cell biological and bacterial adhesion assays. Hemocytes will be stained with a fluorescent dye and exposed to GFP-labeled bacteria.
