Acute Stroke Care

Acute stroke care is the time-sensitive evaluation and treatment of a stroke during its earliest phase, when rapid decisions can limit brain injury and preserve function. Clinicians first stabilize airway, breathing, circulation, and glucose, then use neurologic assessment and brain imaging to distinguish ischemic stroke, caused by vessel blockage, from hemorrhagic stroke, caused by bleeding. Ischemic cases may receive intravenous thrombolysis or mechanical thrombectomy when eligible, whereas hemorrhagic cases require blood-pressure management, reversal of anticoagulation, and neurosurgical assessment. Coordinated emergency care, followed by monitoring and early prevention planning, improves survival and functional recovery while guiding evidence-based stroke systems.

Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) requires a collaborative healthcare approach to restore renal function and prevent complications. Essential management strategies involve monitoring fluid and electrolyte balance, adjusting medications, initiating dialysis when necessary, and providing nutritional support.Fluid and Electrolyte ManagementFluid Monitoring: Regularly monitoring body weight, central venous pressure, and urine output helps detect fluid imbalances early. Patient intake and output are...

2025

Source: Schregel, K., et al. Optimized Management of Endovascular Treatment for Acute Ischemic Stroke. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates the endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke using the stent retriever-assisted vacuum-locked extraction technique. A guiding sheath is introduced through the femoral artery to reach the clot. A catheter with a stent retriever secures and extracts the clot. Vascular imaging is done to confirm successful reperfusion.

Acute Coronary Syndrome IV: Interprofessional Care

IntroductionThe management of Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) aims to minimize myocardial damage, preserve myocardial function, and prevent complications.Initial ManagementInpatient management involves continuous cardiac monitoring, preferably in an ICU, focusing on blood pressure, serum sodium, potassium, and creatinine levels, and urine output. Ongoing pharmacologic management is crucial for stabilizing the patient.Supplemental Oxygen: Administer supplemental oxygen if oxygen saturation is...

Cited by 21 •

2018

The outcome of patients with acute ischemic stroke depends on swift restoration of cerebral blood flow. This protocol aims at optimizing the management of such patients by minimizing peri-procedural timings and rendering the time from hospital admission to reperfusion as short as possible.
