Central Retinal Arteriolar Equivalent

Central Retinal Arteriolar Equivalent (CRAE) is a quantitative index that summarizes the average caliber of retinal arterioles visible in a fundus photograph, providing a noninvasive window into the body’s microvascular health. It is calculated by measuring selected retinal arterioles and combining their diameters with standardized formulas to produce a single vessel-width estimate; narrower values may reflect arteriolar constriction or structural narrowing. In medicine, CRAE supports assessment of hypertensive and diabetic retinal changes, research on retinal microcirculation, and studies linking vascular geometry with cardiovascular risk. Its reproducibility also enables comparisons across patients, populations, and longitudinal studies.

Source: Hakim, M. A. et al., Isolation and Functional Analysis of Arteriolar Endothelium of Mouse Brain Parenchyma. J. Vis. Exp. (2022).This video demonstrates the functional analysis of an arteriolar endothelial tube isolated from a mouse brain. It outlines the steps for measuring intracellular calcium levels and membrane potential, both at baseline and in response to pharmacological stimulation.

The "center" of a data set is also a way of describing location. The two most widely used measures of the "center" of the data are the mean (average) and the median. The words "mean" and "average" are often used interchangeably. The substitution of one word for the other is common practice. The technical term is "arithmetic mean" and "average" is technically a center location. However, in practice among non-statisticians, "average" is commonly accepted for "arithmetic mean." Another measure of...

Pharmaceutical Equivalents

As defined by regulatory standards, pharmaceutical equivalents require generic drug products to have identical dosage forms and chemically identical active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). They must adhere to compendial or applicable standards for potency, content uniformity, disintegration times, and dissolution rates. In the case of modified-release dosage forms, variations in drug content are permissible as long as the delivered amount remains consistent with the innovator drug product.

Equivalent Capacitance

Multiple capacitors can be connected in a circuit in series or parallel configuration. When the capacitor combination is connected to a battery, the potential drop across each capacitor and the magnitude of charge stored in the individual capacitor depends on the type of the connection. The capacitor combination is replaced by a single equivalent capacitor that stores the same amount of charge as the combination for a given potential difference. The following strategies are adopted to calculate...
