Cuff Pressure Modulation

Cuff pressure modulation is the controlled adjustment of pressure within an airway device cuff to maintain an effective seal while limiting injury to surrounding tracheal tissue. In endotracheal and tracheostomy tubes, clinicians monitor cuff pressure with a manometer and modify inflation as airway pressure, ventilation conditions, or tube position change, balancing leakage prevention against excessive pressure on the mucosa. This technique supports reliable mechanical ventilation, reduces the risk of aspiration and air leakage, and helps prevent complications such as tracheal ischemia and tissue damage. It is therefore an important component of safe airway management in anesthesia, critical care, and emergency medicine.

Polymersomes are self-assembled polymeric vesicles that are formed in spherical shapes to minimize Gibb's Free Energy. In the case of drug delivery, more elongated structures are beneficial. This protocol establishes methods to create more rod-like polymersomes, with elongated aspect ratios, using salt to induce osmotic pressure and reduce internal vesicle volumes.

Mouse Model for Pancreas Transplantation Using a Modified Cuff Technique

Among abdominal solid organ transplantation, pancreatic grafts are prone to develop severe ischemia reperfusion injury-associated graft damage, leading eventually to early graft loss. This protocol describes a model of murine pancreas transplantation using a non-suture cuff technique, ideally suited for analyzing these early, deleterious damages.

The laser heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron micro-diffraction techniques allows researchers to explore the nature and properties of new phases of matter at extreme pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. Heterogeneous samples can be characterized in situ under high pressure by 2D mapping and combined powder, single-crystal and multigrain diffraction approaches.

Source: Hamna J. Qureshi and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana Here we will highlight the key similarities and differences of noninvasive blood pressure measurement techniques between humans and rodents and examine the engineering principles that govern blood pressure. The principles that govern current cuff technology to acquire systolic and diastolic pressures will also be discussed. Commercially available cuffs that connect...
