Diagnostic Ultrasound

Diagnostic ultrasound is a noninvasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize internal structures and assess function without ionizing radiation. A transducer sends sound pulses into the body, receives echoes reflected at tissue boundaries, and converts their timing and intensity into real-time images; Doppler methods analyze frequency shifts to measure blood flow. In medicine, ultrasound supports evaluation of abdominal organs, the heart, blood vessels, and developing fetuses, while also guiding procedures such as biopsies and needle placement. Its portability, relatively low cost, and ability to provide dynamic imaging make it valuable in routine diagnosis, emergency care, and point-of-care assessment.

Diagnostic ultrasound imaging has proven to be effective in diagnosing various respiratory diseases in human and animal subjects. We demonstrate a comprehensive ultrasound protocol utilized by Dr. Zuo's lab to analyze diaphragm kinetics specifically in mouse models. This is also a non-invasive research technique which can provide quantitative information on mouse respiratory muscle function.

Source: Amelia R. Adelsperger, Evan H. Phillips, and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana High-frequency ultrasound systems are used to acquire high resolution images. Here, the use of a state-of-the-art system will be demonstrated to image the morphology and hemodynamics of small pulsatile arteries and veins found in mice and rats. Ultrasound is a relatively inexpensive, portable, and versatile method for the noninvasive...

We describe a new ultrasound-based vector tissue Doppler imaging technique to measure muscle contraction velocity, strain and strain rate with sub-millisecond temporal resolution during dynamic activities. This approach provides complementary measurements of dynamic muscle function and could lead to a better understanding of mechanisms underlying musculoskeletal disorders.

Diagnostic Necropsy and Tissue Harvest

Source: Kay Stewart, RVT, RLATG, CMAR; Valerie A. Schroeder, RVT, RLATG. University of Notre Dame, IN Many animal experiments rely on final data collection time points that are gathered from the harvesting and testing of organs and tissues. The use of appropriate methods for the collection of organs and tissues can impact the quality of the samples and the analysis of the data that is gleaned for the testing of the tissues. The method of euthanasia of the animal can also impact the quality of...
