Fibular Cutting Guide

A fibular cutting guide is a surgical planning and positioning tool that helps clinicians perform controlled bone cuts in the fibula, often during reconstructive procedures. Designed from preoperative imaging and a planned reconstruction, the guide is positioned against the bone to indicate osteotomy locations, angles, and lengths, translating the virtual plan into a reproducible intraoperative technique. In medicine, it can support fibula free-flap reconstruction, including shaping bone segments for mandibular repair, while helping coordinate bone geometry with the surgical design. By improving cutting precision and workflow consistency, the guide may aid complex reconstruction and postoperative functional outcomes.

Source: Dalkin, W., et al. The Fibular Nerve Injury Method: A Reliable Assay to Identify and Test Factors That Repair Neuromuscular Junctions. J. Vis. Exp. (2016)This video demonstrates a surgical procedure to induce fibular nerve injury in a mouse to study neuromuscular junction (NMJ) regeneration. The procedure involves exposing the fibular nerve, applying controlled pressure to induce injury, and ensuring the epineurium remains intact to support axonal regeneration. Over time, macrophages...

We have developed a nerve injury method to reliably examine muscle reinnervation, and thus regeneration of neuromuscular junctions in mice. This technique involves injuring the common fibular nerve via a simple and highly reproducible surgery. Muscle reinnervation in then assessed by whole-mounting the extensor digitorum longus muscle.
