Formaldehyde Releasing Agent

Formaldehyde-releasing agents are compounds that gradually generate formaldehyde under defined conditions, providing controlled antimicrobial activity or chemical fixation. The released formaldehyde reacts with proteins and nucleic acids, creating covalent cross-links that disrupt microbial function and stabilize cellular structures; release rates depend on the compound and conditions such as pH and temperature. In medicine, these agents support disinfection, preservation of some formulations, and fixation of tissue specimens for histopathology. Because formaldehyde can irritate tissues and present toxicological risks, concentration, exposure time, handling, and regulatory status require careful control.

This protocol describes the preparation and characterization of a dendrimeric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent that carries cyclen-based macrocyclic chelates coordinating paramagnetic gadolinium ions. In a series of MRI experiments in vitro, this agent produced an amplified MRI signal when compared to the commercially available monomeric analogue.

Source: Vy M. Dong and Daniel Kim, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA Controlling the reactivity and selectivity during the synthesis of a molecule is very important criteria for chemists. This has led to the development of many reagents that allow chemists to pick and choose reagents suitable for a given task. Quite often, a balance between reactivity and selectivity needs to be achieved. This experiment will use IR spectroscopy to monitor the reaction and to...

We describe here methods for neonatal capsaicin treatment to induce atopic dermatitis in rats and exposure of vaporized formaldehyde to investigate the effects of formaldehyde inhalation on atopic dermatitis.

Introducing Experimental Agents into the Mouse

Many investigations performed in mice (Mus musculus) require the administration of an experimental agent to the animal. For example, it may be of interest to test the efficacy of a specific therapy, to induce a pathologic condition, or to administer anesthesia or palliative care. In order to ensure safe and efficient delivery, it is important to consider a variety of factors prior to the administration of the treatment. This video, which reviews agent administration in the mouse, begins by...

A Freeze-Thawing Method to Prepare Chitosan-Poly(vinyl alcohol) Hydrogels Without Crosslinking Agents and Diflunisal Release Studies

The freezing-thawing method is used to produce chitosan-poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels without crosslinking agents. For this method, it is important to consider the freezing conditions (temperature, number of cycles) and polymer ratio, which can affect the properties and applications of the obtained hydrogels.
